Increasing levels of contaminants in the air have created new environmental and public health challenges. Of particular concern is the emission of highly toxic, corrosive and odor-causing gases. Such gases include:

- Hydrogen sulfide (H2S)
- Sulfur dioxide (SO2)
- Chlorine (CL2)
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
- Ammonia (NH4)
- Ozone (O3)
Many contaminants in the air are not highly corrosive, but nonetheless create significant odor problems. This is a concern with many organic substances, such as hydrocarbons (VOCs), amines, indoles, mercaptans and scatoles.
Filter Innovations provides proven solutions for the removal of multiple compounds from the air. Among our products are dry media-based Air Phase Treatment Systems such as air scrubbers, air phase adsorbers, pollution control barrels and passive mini-vent media filters.
Advantages of an FII Air Phase Treatment system include:
- High efficiency removal of contaminants and odors from the air stream
- Airflow range: 100 – 100,000 CFM
- Multiple chambers
- Multiple beds for different types of media
- No need to handle chemicals
- Specialty media and custom-engineered equipment can be adapted to meet unique application requirements
- Variety of construction materials: stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, HDPE and PVC are available
- Turnkey operation
- Rapid installation
- Easy operation and maintenance including minimal downtime for media replacement
- Additional options: heat and cooling, mist/grease elimination, bulk loading and unloading, pre- and post-treatment filtration packages
Filter Innovations designs, manufactures and installs its products; offers on-site services; and can supply parts and media if requested.
Air Phase Adsorption Media
The core component of FII Air Phase Treatment systems is the activated carbon adsorption media which facilitates contaminant removal. Activated carbon air phase media comes in many forms, including powdered, granular and pelletized. There are additionally three types of pelletized activated carbon: coconut shell-based, coal- or wood-based, and impregnated.

Filter Innovations also provides specialty media which are formulated for specific applications, including both odor control and contaminant removal. Types of specialty media include:
- FII HS-600: Granular, silicate compound impregnated with potassium permanganate
- FII XB-17: 50/50 v/v blend of HS-600 and activated carbon

Corrosion Coupon
Filter Innovations offers corrosion measurement coupons for determining corrosion levels in the air. The accurate measurement of these levels allows us to choose suitable construction materials for custom-designed air treatment systems. Many corrosion measurement coupons are available, including:
- Copper strips – measure sulfide levels
- Silver strips – measure chloride levels
Corrosion Classification
FII Air Phase Treatment system can be designed for all levels of corrosion. The following corrosion classification system is used:
- G1 – Mild (Target)
- G2 – Moderate
- G3 – Harsh
- GX – Severe

Odour Measurement Techniques
Filter Innovations uses both sensory and chemical techniques to measure odors:
Sensory Techniques: Utilize human assessors to evaluate odors. Filter Innovations typically applies olfactometry, which measures the concentration of an odor based on European odor units (ouE/m3) or U.S. threshold odor units (TUN).
Chemical Techniques: Utilize conventional analytical techniques to measure the concentration of specific odorous compounds in the sample gas. This is achieved by gas chromatography or mass spectroscopy analysis, using specific chemical analyzers (e.g., hydrogen sulfide analysis), wet chemical techniques (e.g., mercaptans), etc.
